Migraine Headache Symptoms, Causes, Treatment


There are multiple symptoms can be found in a Migraine, it is a neurological condition. Common symptoms are intense, debilitating headaches. The patient may feel nausea, numbness or tingling, sensitivity to light and sound, vomiting, difficulty speaking. It can affect all ages and it’s a hereditary disease.

Swelling of blood vessels combined with the release of chemicals is the main cause of a Migraine. The temporal artery of forehead enlarges hence caused Migraine headache attacks. By this expansion, the coil nerves around the artery stretched and release chemicals like serotonin. This chemical causes pain and inflammation. Further, the temporal artery enlarges and cause migraine headaches. A headache may last long for around 3 hours to 3 days, in some cases, it many lasts for a longer period of time. The particular reason is yet not clear, but studies have shown that it is genetic. Rather than men, women are more susceptible to migraine attacks.

Migraine Symptoms and Causes

Due to its vascular nature, it can be easily differentiated from common headaches. In a migraine, the patient can feel a headache from moderate-to-severe on one side of the head along with symptoms of nausea and vomiting. Along with headaches, other common symptoms are nausea, dizziness, vomiting, sound and smell, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, light (aura) flashes and more. Only headaches may be the symptoms in many cases. It can happen once or twice in a year and headaches attacks vary from every few days. The intensity also varies, sometimes light or moderate to a sometimes severe chronic migraine.

This type of a headache can be categorized into two types. First is Classic Migraine. In this type, the patient suffers from symptoms along with a headache. The second type is a common migraine. Here only symptoms can be noticed is a severe headache. A migraine affected people can suffer a headache due to some external factors like stress, exhaustion, lack of sleep or food, menstrual cycle, change in weather, food items, caffeine, strong smell and more.

Migraine Treatment and Cure

There is no particular treatment for a Migraine headache. But one can avoid it by know the cause of a headache. You can consult a doctor to get the best treatments. Doctors often provide drugs which can prevent a migraine from occurring. If the patient feels headache bouts occur multiple times a day, then drugs are prescribed. Doctors mostly prescribe OTC pain relief medicine if a headache is severe. Along with this medicine, doctors also give medicine for nausea to fight symptoms of a migraine. Vitamin B and folic acid are also very effective in some cases to treat headaches. Instead of addictive painkillers, these supplement rich food or medicine can be used. The recently developed trans-cranial magnetic stimulator (TMS) is also used to prevent migraine headaches. Preventive and pain-relieving medication can help manage migraine headaches.

People, who are suffering from a migraine, know their type of a headache. If they feel any new type headache, more than 2-3 days long, should be checked by the doctor. Other than a headache, if symptoms like fever, stiff neck, confusion, or paralysis found, must be treated immediately.
